Mom, how is God like an egg?
Growing up, my mother used to attempt to explain the concept of the “trinity” to me by making an analogy between the trinity and an egg.
“You see” she would say, “It’s like an egg. You have the outer shell, you have the white, and you have the yolk. They are three parts, but just one egg.”
This was the beginning of the end of my Christian belief. Even at the early age of six or seven years old, I knew deep in my heart of hearts, that God Almighty, the Creator of the entire Universe, simply was not anything like an egg. Thus, the journey began. The interrogation began.
“Mom, how is God like an egg?” ”Can you fry God?” ”Can you boil, God?” ”Can you eat, God?” ”What if the shell breaks?” ”Does that mean that God is broken?”
These are just a few of the numerous questions I began asking. Soon thereafter, my mother began referring to me as the “doubting Thomas” of the family. She also began telling me that “You need to stop asking these questions and just believe!” ”Because if you you are having to ask questions, that means you are a doubting Thomas and you will bust Hell wide open!”
Just in case you were wondering. . . that didn’t stop the questions. . . I had figured out that the reason my mother had gotten so upset about my questions, was because she didn’t know the answers. So I decided that I would find the answers myself. . . in books.
