The Hercules Dilemma
Many years passed, all of which were filled with more and more questions for my parents, who never seemed to have the answers, or if they did have the answers, they sure could’ve had me fooled. I began to read about Greek Mythology and the gods and goddesses, which I found quite interesting. I remember the first time I thought I had figured out something just absolutely marvelous. I was convinced that I had figured out how it was that Jesus (AS) in the Bible was the son of God.
Sidebar: You see, I had never really believed that God could have a son, it was one of the main issues I had with my parent’s religion. It just did not make since to me that God Almighty would have to be born from a woman and breastfed and cleaned after having bowel movements and urinating. I could not wrap my head around it. Especially after my mom gave birth to my little brother and I saw how messy he was. I kept thinking to myself. . . is it really possible that God made himself into a baby? Why on earth would God do that? Who was taking care of things while God was a baby? And then of course, there was the dilemma of. . .well if Jesus (AS) is God, then who was he always praying to, himself? It just didn’t work for me.
Back to the story. . .I was convinced that the Bible had it wrong, and that the reason for this was. . . . ta-da. . . “Hey Mom! Jesus (AS) wasn’t really the son of God. . .it seems like somehow, the story of Hercules from Greek Mythology was infused into the Biblical story of Jesus (AS).”
I was sooooo excited about my discovery. . .my mom. . not so much.
I even tried to explain my reasoning with her (keep in mind, I was only in middle school). ”Mom, it’s like this. . .you see. . in Greek Mythology. . .The Supreme God, Zeus, came down to earth in the form of a man and impregnated a woman. The woman gave birth to Hercules. Hercules was part mortal and part immortal. Hercules had to go through twelve labors to prove that he was worthy of being completly immortal so he could go to heaven and be with his father, Zeus”. . “You see Mom! Just like in the Bible!”
Once again . . . I was excited . . . my mom . . . not so much.
