The Sleepover
When I was in middle school, I wanted so badly to be popular and to fit in somewhere. I became best friends with a girl in one of my classes and she and I used to spend the night at each other’s houses fairly often. One weekend in particular she was having a big sleepover at her parent’s house. All of the most popular girls in school were invited to the sleepover, and of course, she invited me since I was her best friend.
We were having a wonderful time and just having so much fun that night. At a little before midnight we all went to sleep. That was short-lived. A little after midnight we were all awakened by the sound of loud banging on the door and yelling outside. My friend’s parents ran to the door to see what was going on. When they opened the door, it was my mother and stepfather. My parents were accusing my friend’s parents of being “Devil Worshippers” and allowing “Satanists” into their home.
Apparently my parents had received an “anonymous” phone call tell them that there were girls present at the sleepover who were wearing “black eyeliner” which was a sign of “devil worshippers.” As if that wasn’t enough for my parents, some of the girls were wearing “dark-colored clothing” which was also an indication of “devil worshippers.” And if that still wasn’t enough. . . there was some girls there that were wearing . . . are you ready . . . a peace sign . . . YES . . . a peace sign! Because you see . . . the peace sign was not a sign of peace according to my parents . . . it was an upside-down broken cross and something “sacreligious” and “satanic” and it was the icing on the proverbial cake.
After all this. . . I was taken from my friend’s house and forced to go with my parents. You can imagine what happened when I returned to school the following Monday. I was the laughing stock of the school. My search continued . . . I knew that all of this nonsense could not be from God.
